Recognizing the urgent need to improve water access in Kakamega County, USAID launched a sustainable water infrastructure project with a clear objective: to deliver safe, clean water directly to households. The project has enhanced health, education, and economic opportunities. By bringing water directly to households, the project reduced the burden of water collection and delivered a meaningful improvement in daily living conditions.
The @USAID Western Kenya Water Project (WKWP) is an ongoing initiative in Kakamega County designed to expand access to clean and safe water. This project is a partnership between USAID and the Kakamega County Government, reflecting the US Government’s decades-long commitment to supporting development efforts in Kenya. To implement this vision, Jakimo Infrastructure was contracted as the main implementing partner.
Their role was to design and deliver a reliable water distribution system with an emphasis on last-mile connectivity ensuring water reached not just central collection points but individual homes. For the project to succeed, durable and high-quality piping was essential. Jakimo Infrastructure partnered with Danco Capital Limited, to supply advanced high-quality piping solutions that meet international standards.
Danco provided 12.2 kilometers of High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) pipes that were selected for their durability, flexibility, and resistance to corrosion, making them well-suited for Kakamega’s varied terrain. Jakimo Infrastructure oversaw the construction of the system, ensuring a reliable connection between Soi Springs to over 200 households.
Upon completion, the infrastructure was formally handed over to the Kakamega County Water and Sanitation Company- Kacwasco in December, 2024. The company will be responsible for its ongoing operation and maintenance. This ensures the long-term sustainability of the investment and continued access to clean water for the community.
The impact of the project has been significant connecting 200 households and making its easy for Women and children no longer need to undertake long, burdensome trips to collect water, freeing time for education and economic activities. Health outcomes have improved thanks to reduced exposure to unsafe water sources.
This initiative also highlights the effectiveness of collaboration among development partners, local contractors, utilities, and private-sector suppliers. It demonstrates that with careful planning, appropriate technology, and strong partnerships, long-standing challenges in water access can be addressed sustainably.
At Danco Capital Limited, our participation in such projects aligns with our mission of building for future generations. We remain committed to delivering high-quality products and supporting solutions that improve lives across Africa
